About ASAH

ASAH stands for Association of Students of African Heritage. The association was founded by and for students who can directly and indirectly distract their roots from Africa and for those who have affinity with the African continent.

In spite of earlier attempts of others to found a student association with the aim to unite students of African heritage, this pursuit has been just realized in the autumn of 2006 with the establishment of ASAH.

ASAH initially operated under the name ALSA (African Link Student Association) as a response to the lack of a student association that unites different African cultures.

ASAH showcases the African Diaspora among the numerous ethnic student associations at the University. ASAH is first of its kind at Erasmus University, but also in The Netherlands.

ASAH activities are geared on providing members with opportunities to further develop themselves on a personal, professional, social and cultural level during the course of their studies.

The founders of ASAH are Justine Bell, Aurelia Dagadu, Ali Nasir and Yves van Oel. The founders were assisted by Osric Canton, Diana van der Lugt, Johishi Romney en Issac Weldensei.

Goals

  • Increasing awareness about the bond and common heritage shared between students in the Diaspora and students from the African continent.
  • Making students aware of the Dutch businesses and public sector by creating network and carreer possibilities for her members.
  • Providing students of different cultural backgrounds with opportunities to interact in order to stimulate mutual respect and understanding.
  • Informing youngsters about the possibilities of higher education for them as students.
  • Aiding exchange students at EUR  in getting familiar with Dutch culture.
  • ASAH wants to create bond between students of different social and cultural backgrounds that have a shared interest in questions that concern people of African heritage. To accomplish this, ASAH asks its members for an active participation in the student association. ASAH also hopes that its members get a better understanding of the Dutch society and the role they can play in it.
