What is black history month? For every group in a society it is important to know its history in order to comprehend the position that this group holds within society and to know what led to that position. This knowledge history could then function as a historical compass which lifts a group of people out of a certain position and guides these people to that which they aim to achieve in the future. A thorough knowledge of oneself and ones history, creates a positive effect regarding the self-awareness process which, according to our opinion, contributes to the integration process. A community that knows its history and therefore becomes aware of its position within a society, will feel that it is its responsibility to add a valuable contribution to the development of the community in its totality. This is not only important for the current generation but also for the generations to come. Due to the fact that the Dutch government doesn’t thoroughly addresses the historic events wherein black people played a role, be it big or small, ASAH organizes BHM to provide information regarding this topic. Black history month is the month in which ASAH explicitly concentrates on persons and themes related to people of African descent. In this way, ASAH aims to advance the self-awareness process in the Netherlands. Our goal is to organize BHM annually with the intention that students, who can either trace their roots directly or indirectly to Africa, have a platform wherein, they can intellectually discuss social issues which relates to them.
