February 2008, was the first time ASAH focused on the celebration of Black history month. During this month ASAH emphasised the contributions that black men and women made to the world. In the United States, the United Kingdom, and some countries in the Caribbean Black History Honth is an annual occurrence. We hope that the Netherlands will begin to be more open for this topic. On the ASAH website were various articles which highlighted the achievements of black people in general all over the world. The articles were written by the ASAH board and committee members with the aim to give readers an introduction on the topic of BHM and to motivate the readers to further conduct research themselves. On February the 28th ASAH organised a lecture with the theme: “Identity” As a guest speaker ASAH invited Ms. Assata Berkel who translated the Willie Lynch Letter to Dutch . The second guest speaker was Prof. Dr. Alex van Stripiaan who gave a lecture on the ‘Back to the roots’ project. Two participants of this project aided the professor in his presentation.
Hereafter a short movie concerning the ‘Back to the roots’ project was shown where we could see the participants of the project (people primarily form the Caribbean) visiting Africa. The people in the audience could later on ask questions that they had regarding the project and discuss on the discussion statements that were introduced during the event. Two participants of the event ended the event musically. BHM proved to be an interactive and educative event. |
