Black History Month 2009 On february 20th the second edition of Black History Month, organized by the Association of Students of African Heritage also known as ASAH kicked off at Erasmus University Rotterdam. With an inspiring presentation by British historian Andrew Muhammad on ‘The Influence of Ancient Black Civilizations’, the audience was taken on a journey to the ancient past where they learned about the great achievements of the ancestors of present day Africans. Alim Kamara the spoken word artist added a rhythmic flair to the presentation with his lyrical prowess.
The second part of this year’s Black History Month which took place on February 26th had ‘PRIDE?!’ as its theme. Presentations were held by Ben Toppin who spoke about ‘Names and Self-Awareness’, Francio Guadeloupe who shared his views about ‘The Role of Black Intellectuals in the New World Order’ and Marian Markelo who spoke about ‘Black Women Self-Empowerment’. The audience had a chance to respond to the insights of the guest speakers, which made for a lively discussion. In conclusion, guest speakers and audience could enjoy the remainder of the evening at bar-restaurant ‘Etude’ of Erasmus University. Black History Month 2009 was an enlightening, inspiring and entertaining experience for all who were present and for those of you who missed out rest assured, you will be given the opportunity to attend next year.
