Africa day 2009

Dear reader,

On Saturday April 25th 2009 the fourth edition of Africa Day took place in The Hague. This is a yearly recurring event made possible by ‘Evert Vermeer Stichting’ in which Africa takes centre stage. With over fifty workshops, presentations and debates present day topics are explored and explained. This was done by speakers who play a main part during this day. They have come with new knowledge, ideas and viewpoints. The expertise, political affiliation and origin of the speakers varied greatly. Several ASAH members travelled together to The Hague where the Africa Day took place.

The day began with a speech held by minister Bert Koenders. In his speech he emphasized the importance of developmental collaboration. After his speech, visitors could partake in a workshop, debate or presentation of choice. Such as for example; ‘A new paradigm for increased access to healthcare in Africa’, ‘Circle of Hope for African Children living within the HIV/AIDS pandemic?’, ‘Enterprising in your own future…from dream to plan’ or a workshop African dance.

In the afternoon the plenary speech took place. This was held by Paul Rusesabagina on whose story the film ‘Hotel Rwanda’ is based. This man who has saved many human lives with his own hands touched many with his story on Africa Day.

After this, the visitors could partake in the second part of the workshops that were offered in the afternoon program. There was lots of choice in these as well. Angélique Kidjo gave those present a musical conclusion. This Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter from Benin blew the roof off with her performance. With this an inspiring, informative and fun day unfortunately came to an end.

We greatly recommend Africa Day and hope you join us next year!

Yours sincerely
