Good Hair Movie Night Straight, weave, curly, lace front, afro, nappy hair, black hair, soft hair, long hair, beautiful hair, good hair.
These were subjects under discussion during the ‘Good Hair Movie Night’. The movie ‘Good Hair’ from the well-known African-American comedian Chris Rock tells us many things about our hair that we know and some things that we don’t know. He delves into the billion dollar industry behind black hair and shows us how the human hair for our wigs and weaves ends up in the beauty supply stores. During the discussion after the movie several discussion statements passed the revue with which we tried to gain insight in to why black women spend so much time, money and effort on straightening their hair. Many were of the opinion the nappy hair in general is not looked upon as neat in a professional setting: it’s easier to find a job with straightened hair. Others simply find their hair more beautiful when it’s straightened. Many participants in the discussion argued that self-hate is the basis of straightening ones hair. Because of self-hate black women strive for a European beauty ideal. We recommend the movie ‘Good Hair’ to anyone who wants to know more about black hair. We hope that you will be present at our upcoming movie nights! Yours sincerely, ASAH Board 2009-2010 |
